Frequently asked questions when you're moving home.

We're here to help.

Can I keep my current tariff when I move home?

If you’re currently an E.ON Next customer, the great news is you can take your existing energy tariff with you to your new home.1

If you are with another supplier you will need to get in contact with them, as not all suppliers will allow you to take your existing tariff with you.

How do I give opening or closing energy readings when I’ve moved home?

You can send us a meter reading in your online account or email us at hi@eonnext.com.

What should I do with energy bills for the person who lived here before me?

Firstly, don’t open any post that is addressed to the previous occupier. Simply cross out your address and write "Return to sender - No longer at this address" on the envelope and post it back. If you have a forwarding address for the previous occupier then please include this on the envelope as this will help us get the information to the right address.

If you’ve let us know you’ve moved in, don’t worry, you’ll only be billed from the meter readings you gave us. Any debt that the previous occupier has with us won’t affect your credit rating.

What happens if I’ve got a credit or money left to pay after I’ve moved?

When you send us your final electricity and gas meter readings, we’ll update your account and use these to work out your final energy bill which you’ll need to pay as normal if there’s an outstanding balance.

If you have a credit, we’ll automatically refund it as long as we’ve got the information to finalise your account, unless you’re keeping us at your new home in which case it’ll stay on your account.

It normally takes about 10 working days for us to refund your account, although it can take longer if you have a large credit balance.

What do I do if I have a smart meter in my new home?

If you have a smart meter then you can get more information about how it will work depending on if you are a credit or prepayment customer. Get help with your smart meter or advice using your Smart Pay As You Go meter.

If your electricity and gas meters aren’t currently smart then you may want to upgrade them to a standard smart meter or a Smart Pay As You Go meter.

What happens if I’m moving into a house with a prepayment meter?

If your new home has a prepayment meter you should contact the energy company that supplies the property as soon as possible. Let them know that you are moving in and when to ensure that you don’t get any additional charges for debt the previous owner owed.

If you have to put money in the meter before you’re able to let them know, make sure to mention this. As long as you can provide proof of your move in date they will be able to refund any additional charges that you had to pay.

For advice on how to top up and other handy tips check out our guide to prepayment meters.

Switching to a credit meter.

If you would like to switch to a credit meter you will need to contact the supplier once you have moved in. In most cases you will need to pass a credit check to change from a prepayment to a credit meter. This is still the case if you are moving into a home that already has one, even though you may not have any debt. If you fail the credit check you can request to put down a security deposit instead at your suppliers discretion.

If you rent your property you don’t need your landlord’s permission to request a meter change.

Smart meters are a popular form of meter that has both a prepayment and credit mode that is managed remotely by your energy supplier. Therefore, if the property already has a smart meter you won’t need a new meter to be installed when you switch.

If your property doesn’t have one you can request to switch to a smart meter for free, including installation. Smart meters are a handy way to monitor your energy use, helping you to budget with confidence. You will still need to pass a credit check before your installation unless you want to switch to Smart Pay As You Go.

Do I need to let the council know I’ve moved?

It’s a good idea to contact both your local council and the council of your new property once you know your move in date. This will help to make sure you don’t pay any council tax that you don’t need to.

The legal bit.

1 You may be ineligible to take your tariff to your new home if any of the below apply:

  • Your new property is linked to a prepaid or complex meter.

  • You have different tariffs for your electricity and gas.

  • Your current property has single fuel and your new property would have dual fuel.

  • You will have less than 20 days remaining on your fixed tariff contract term on the date you move in to your new property.

  • You only use gas.
