Key takeaways:
More support for off-grid homes: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding has risen to £9,000 for properties replacing oil or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) heating systems in England and Wales.
Easy access, more savings: You won’t have to fill out complicated government paperwork to claim the grant because your chosen installer can apply on your behalf – the £9,000 is taken directly off your final installation bill.
Good news! Keeping your home warm without relying on fossil fuels is becoming more accessible for homeowners across England and Wales.
The UK Government has just increased the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant to £9,000, specifically to help homes running on oil or Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
This update could offer you the ideal opportunity to upgrade to a modern and efficient air source heat pump (ASHP) while helping to lower your upfront installation costs.
Let’s take a look at what this could mean for you and your home – if you’re eligible.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government fund that helps property owners replace old fossil fuel boilers with low-carbon heating.
While the standard grant is £7,500 for homes on mains gas, the Government has added a £1,500 uplift for homes running on oil or LPG, bringing the total support up to £9,000. This enhanced £9,000 grant is expected to run until March 2027.1
This financial boost could help millions of homes across England and Wales that currently rely on delivered fossil fuels. Because these homes don’t have a mains gas connection, they’re exposed to global market shocks and delivery price spikes.
An air source heat pump extracts natural warmth from the outdoor air (yes, even when it is freezing) and uses it to heat your radiators and water.
ASHPs are particularly impressive because they can produce up to three times more energy than they consume (aka, efficiencies of over 300%), while gas boilers typically have efficiencies about 90%. This could make an ASHP the more energy efficient option. Learn more about air source heat pump efficiency.
Figuring out if your home qualifies for the extended £9,000 BUS funding isn’t as complicated as you might think. Let’s check out the eligibility criteria:
The first one is simple. Your property must be located in England or Wales.
The maximum £9,000 BUS grant is only for properties replacing an existing oil boiler or a liquefied petroleum gas system.
If you live in a new build or social housing, you won’t be eligible for the grant. Your property also won’t be eligible if it’s already received government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler.
It’s also important to note that if you own a new build that the developer’s still building, you won’t be eligible. However, if you move into a finished new build with a fossil fuel boiler, you could be eligible for a grant for a heat pump under the scheme.
The installation must be handled from start to finish by an installer holding active Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation, ensuring your system’s designed and sized properly for your home.

The final cost of an air source heat pump installation rally depends on the size of your home and how well it holds heat. However, the £9,000 grant could make a dent in your installation costs, especially if you live off grid.
Without support, a typical off grid heat pump installation usually ranges between £11,500 and £15,000. But when you deduct the £9,000 BUS grant, your upfront cost drops.

Beyond the lower setup costs, you could also be protecting yourself from future fossil fuel market spikes. According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero news story, the Government is taking decisive steps to break the link between gas and electricity prices, making running an ultra-efficient heat pump more and more cost-effective over time.
You won’t have to worry about getting trapped in a web of confusing application forms. The scheme is designed to let your installer do all the heavy lifting.
Contact an accredited MCS certified company, like us! We can look over your property, evaluate your heating needs, and give you a detailed quotation.
We offer heat pump installation and can take care of the legwork after you fill out our online survey. We’ll also:
Find out which heat pumps and equipment are suitable for your home (a standard part of a fixed price installation).
Carry out a heat loss assessment on your home.
Install and certify your heat pump.
Give you access to our fully trained heat pump installation and support teams.
Plus, if you've chosen an E.ON Next tariff (like Next Pumped), we’ll switch you over effortlessly.
Your installer will also check your home's eligibility parameters, review your EPC status, and log the formal grant application with Ofgem on your behalf.
If approved, the £9,000 BUS grant will be automatically taken off your quote. You’ll just need to pay the remaining balance, then the installation begins.
With the Government offering to pay up to £9,000 towards your total bill (if you’re eligible), now could be a good time to take the first steps in your heat pump journey.
