Reimagine. Recreate. Restore. That’s the focus for this year’s World Environment Day on June 5. And it’s one we are getting behind. Whilst some parts of the planet have shown signs of recovery due to the various lockdowns, plastic waste is still growing and with travel, manufacturing and usage increasing throughout the rest of the year, it’s not a sustainable situation. Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of UNEP said: “"Biodiversity loss is already costing the global economy 10 percent of its output each year. If we do not sufficiently finance nature-based solutions, we will impact the capacities of countries to make progress on other vital areas such as education, health and employment. If we do not save nature now, we will not be able to achieve sustainable development."(1)
What is World Environment Day?
It was started in 1974 by the United Nations, with the aim of creating environmental awareness and action, with a different country hosting it each year. For 2021, the World Environment Day is being held in Pakistan and the theme is Ecosystem Restoration. It’s the first year of the United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which is a 10 year project aimed at fixing the damage that’s been done to the planet.
How do I get involved?
Since it was created, the UN has made it clear that this should be seen as a day for people to do something to take care of the planet, rather than focusing on large corporations. And there are a number of ways that you can get involved:
Tidy up your local community - Whether that’s doing some litter picking or a recycling drive, you can clear up some rubbish to help improve those green spaces.
Make a compost pile - If you’ve got a garden space then why not start making your own compost? Using compost helps eliminate the need for artificial fertilisers and is great for creating nutrient-rich soil for some gardening.
Leave the car at home - Walk, bike or take public transport if you need to go out and reduce your carbon footprint.
Switch off your appliances - See how much energy you can save by reducing your tech use for a day.
