Fitting the Ohme ePod into your space.
Before buying, you need to verify that the ePod fits your specific parking and charging setup. Unlike tethered units that require large wall footprints for cable wrapping, the ePod is compact, but placement is still critical.
Dimensions and clearances.
The unit: 230mm (H) x 140mm (W) x 100mm (D). Roughly the size of an A5 notebook.
Mounting height: Ideally installed 1.2m – 1.4m from the ground for ergonomic access.
Clearance: Allow at least 150mm of clearance below the unit. You need space to insert your hand and the Type 2 cable connector comfortably.
Connectivity and smart integration.
The Ohme ePod operates independently of home Wi-Fi, utilising a built-in multi-net SIM card that connects to the strongest available 3G or 4G network (EE, Vodafone, O2, or Three).
Software and API capability.
Tariff integration: Direct API integration with intelligent energy tariffs. The charger receives pricing data to automatically schedule charging during the lowest rate windows (p/kWh).
Solar compatibility: Supports solar diversion via the Ohme app. When excess power is being generated by your solar panels, the app can prioritise using that energy first to charge your EV. You decide how strict you want it to be, from only charging when sufficient solar power is available, to mixing a little grid energy to get going, making the most of your self-generated power and potentially reducing the amount drawn from the grid each time you plug in.*
Over-the-Air updates: Firmware updates are delivered automatically via the 4G connection, ensuring compliance with future smart charging regulations (BS EN 61851-1).
Installation and electrical requirements.
Once you’ve picked your ePod, we’ll ask for a few photos of your home. If everything looks standard, our expert engineers can often be with you as soon as the next day. They’ll run a dedicated cable from your consumer unit (your fuse box) to the charger, test everything thoroughly, and show you how to connect the app. Here are the installation complexity levels:
The 'easy win.'
Your charger is on the same wall as your fuse box with a short cable run.
The 'scenic route.'
We need to run cables through several walls or across a large garage.
The 'upgrade.'
If your home has an older fuse box, it might need updating to make sure it’s safe for EV charging.
Everyday usability: charging, connection, and compatibility.
Untethered design: How it works.
The ePod is a "socketed" charger. This means you use your own Type 1 or Type 2 cable. It’s a great choice if you have more than one type of EV in the family, or if you simply want your driveway to look as tidy as possible when you aren't charging.
Devices, cars and tariffs: What works with Ohme.
The Ohme app is where the magic happens. It’s one of the most advanced on the market, allowing you to sync your charging with "time-of-use" tariffs. It talks to the grid to find the greenest and cheapest times to charge, saving you money while you sleep.
4G Connectivity and why it matters.
The ePod uses a 3G/4G multinet SIM. E.ON covers the data cost for the first three years. This is a game-changer because it means your charger won't "drop off" just because someone moved the router inside. It always picks the strongest signal available.
Environmental suitability of the Ohme ePod.
British weather is... predictable in its unpredictability. The ePod is built to handle it all.
Weatherproof.
With an IP54 rating, it’s happy in the rain, snow, or dust.
Tough.
An IK08 impact rating means it can handle the odd knock from a rogue football or a car door.
Temp range.
It operates perfectly from –25°C to +50°C. So whether we’re in a "Beast from the East" or a summer heatwave, your car stays powered.
Ohme ePod features.
Cable entry options and routing.
Our installers love the ePod because it’s flexible. Cables can enter from the rear or the underside, meaning we can often hide the wiring completely behind the unit for a "floating" look. We use 25mm glands to keep everything watertight and neat.
Choosing the right mounting surface.
The best surfaces are solid ones like brick, block, or stone. However, if you have a wooden post or a reinforced garage wall, we can make that work too. During our check, we’ll ensure the spot is stable and close enough to your parking space for easy daily use.
Ohme ePod safety, compliance and certification.
We take your safety seriously. The ePod isn't just a smart box; it’s a highly regulated safety device.
UK Smart Charging Regulations 2021: Fully compliant, ensuring your data is secure and the grid stays balanced.
PEN fault protection: Keeps your home safe without needing extra earthing equipment.
Over-the-air (OTA) updates: Your charger actually gets smarter over time as we push new features and safety tweaks automatically.
Why we love the Ohme ePod.
We love it because it’s fast and flexible. With a 7.4kW output, it delivers a punch without taking up much space. You can use the Ohme app to schedule your charging for when energy is cheapest. It’s like having a teammate who works the night shift just to save you money.
Compact design: Measuring just 230 x 140 x 100 mm.
Stay connected: Built-in 3G/4G connectivity means no more Wi-Fi dropouts.
Sun power: It’s solar compatible so can be powered by your own home solar panels.
Peace of mind: 3-year product and 1-year workmanship warranty.
Universal fit: Works with both Type 1 and Type 2 charging sockets.
