Local solar energy, from your local school to your home.

We're on a mission to make green, local energy accessible and affordable for everyone. We believe energy generation should take place where it is needed, creating an energy system that is more efficient and supports local communities.

That's why we created E.ON Next Community Energy. We install solar panels on large buildings such as schools near you. When the school generates surplus electricity, it is shared with our customers nearby.

We monitor how much energy is being generated, and if you use energy at a time when the school is sharing energy, we will split the energy with all community members and apply a discount to your bill.

This year, 2025, we're launching our first Community Energy pilot together with a local primary school in Newham to allow our customers to enjoy the benefits of local renewable energy.

Be part of the community and benefit.

Take action towards net zero.

Do your bit for the planet without having to spend on expensive equipment for your home, no matter if you rent or own it.

How is my Community Energy credit calculated?

When the school generates more electricity than it needs, the benefits of the extra energy are shared fairly with Community Energy scheme members. This is done through Community Energy credits.

How your credit is calculated.
  • We check how much surplus energy the school produces every 30 minutes.

  • For every unit of surplus electricity (1 kWh), we create, = 1 Community Energy credit.

  • At the same time, we track how much electricity each household is using.

  • If there’s surplus energy and your home is using electricity, you can earn credits.

Here’s how it works.
  • For every unit of electricity (kWh) your home uses during a surplus period, you can earn 1 credit.

  • Credits are shared fairly with all households who are using electricity at the same time.

  • You’ll keep earning credits until:

    • You’ve received 1 credit for each unit of electricity you’ve used, or

    • All the available credits have been shared.

Each credit is worth £0.07, and we apply it as a discount on your energy bill.

Why is my credit higher or lower than my neighbour’s?

The credits you earn depend on two things

  1. How much surplus energy the school generates.

  2. How much electricity you’re using when that surplus is available.

You can only get 1 credit per kWh you use. So:

  • You may earn fewer credits if you’ve already received credits for all your usage, but others are still using more electricity.

  • You may earn more credits if other households are using less, and there are extra credits left to share.

Do I need to change my current tariff?

No, opting in to the Community Energy scheme will mean you can continue on your current tariff as normal. Renewing your tariff will not affect the terms of the Community Energy scheme either.

My current tariff is due to expire during the scheme, what do I need to do?

Renewing your tariff will not affect the terms of the Community Energy scheme.

What should I do if I want to opt out of the scheme?

You have the option to opt out of this scheme at any time. To do so, please call us on 0808 501 5200. We'll inform you of your last day in the scheme and ensure that any credits owed to you are applied to your account. Please note that once you opt out, you'll no longer receive any more credits or discounts associated with the Community Energy scheme.
