Your guide on how to apply for a future-ready business energy connection.

Welcome to the start of something bright. Setting up a new business energy connection might feel like a huge task, but we’re here to make it simple. Think of your new connection as the digital backbone of your business. It’s the steady pulse that keeps your lights on, your machines running, and your team moving forward.

Let's get your business buzzing. Securing a new meter is a partnership. Your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) handles the heavy lifting outside by installing the physical cables to your property. Then, we step in.

As your supplier, E.ON Next installs the meter, connects the dots, and activates your supply contract. We share the workload, so you can focus on what you do best.

Step-by-step: From groundwork to power-on.

We manage the transition from an empty site to a fully powered business. Here’s exactly what happens, and when.

1

DNO connection.

Before we can fit a meter, the physical pipes and wires need to reach your building. Your regional Distribution Network Operator (DNO) takes care of this initial site assessment. They lay the cables and get the grid ready for your specific location.

2

Registration.

Once the DNO finishes their work, they’ll give you a unique identity number. This is an MPAN for electricity or an MPRN for gas. Pass these numbers to us. We’ll register them in the national system to officially take over your supply.

3

Tariff set-up.

Next, we talk numbers. We’ll provide a clear, tailored quote for your new energy contract. Once you’re happy and accept the terms, we set up your official E.ON Next business account. No fuss, just fair pricing.

4

Meter installation.

Time to plug in. We aim to install your new meter within 15 working days of setting up your registered account, provided your site is completely ready and safe.

5

First bill.

After your shiny new meter is on the wall, we keep a close eye on your account. We manage everything through to your first bill. We want to ensure your charges are perfectly accurate from day one.

6

Support.

If there's any issues with your connection, our Energy Specialists are on-hand to help.

New business electricity meters: understanding your profile.

Not all meters work the same way. Business meters are set up based on how much energy you use and when you use it.

Electricity meters for businesses are very different from the one in your hallway at home. They use something called a Profile Class. This determines exactly how your usage data is recorded and settled. Now let's find the right fit for your setup.

Standard business meters (classes 03 and 04).

These are the everyday heroes for standard small and medium enterprises. If you run a local high street shop, a busy salon, or a small office with typical 9-to-5 electricity needs, this is likely exactly what you need.

Half hourly meters (class 00).

Sometimes abbreviated to HH meters. These are mandatory if your site has a peak demand of 100kVA or more. They’re clever pieces of kit that record and transmit your usage data every 30 minutes. This ensures incredibly precise billing for high-demand operations like factories, large farms, or busy warehouses.

Multi-rate meters.

If your business truly comes alive after dark, a multi-rate meter makes sense. These are perfectly suited for businesses operating outside traditional hours, like lively bars, bakeries, or 24/7 hotels. They allow you to access cheaper electricity rates during off-peak windows, such as Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariffs.

Sub-metering.

Do you manage a large premises or act as a landlord for multiple commercial tenants? Through E.ON Energy, we can install sub-meters downstream from your main primary meter. This allows you to accurately track usage by specific location or tenant, keeping billing fair and transparent for everyone sharing the space.

Business gas metering: Sizing for growth.

Gas demands vary wildly depending on what your business does. A small office heating system needs a fraction of the gas required by a commercial kitchen. We provide three key diaphragm meter types to match your specific peak hourly demand.

U6

Capacity up to 6 cubic metres per hour. This is ideal for small shops, standard offices, or low-demand industrial units.

U16

Capacity up to 16 cubic metres per hour. This fits high-demand restaurant kitchens, small factories, or larger commercial properties.

U25

Capacity up to 25 cubic metres per hour. This is the heavy lifter, built for industrial sites, large hotels, or manufacturing hubs.

Smart meters and future-proofing for 2026 and beyond.

We believe in looking ahead. Upgrading your business is about preparing for tomorrow, today. Energy is becoming more data-driven, and smart meters are part of that shift.

The meter replacement standard.

While smart meters are not yet universally mandatory for every single commercial site, they are the clear standard. When aging traditional meters reach the end of their life, the industry standard is to replace them with a second-generation smart meter (known as SMETS2).

MHHS readiness.

Big changes are coming to how the UK grid operates. By the end of 2026, all suppliers must settle electricity usage on a half-hourly basis for smart or advanced meters. This initiative is called Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS). Installing a smart meter right now ensures your business is fully prepared for this major data-led shift.

The E.ON Next advantage.

We like to make upgrades easy. We offer smart meter installations at no extra cost to eligible businesses. This gives you access to near real-time data, helping you spot trends, cut waste, and manage your overheads with absolute confidence.

Customised tariffs: Energy built for your business size.

We know that no two businesses use energy in quite the same way. One may prioritise high capacity, whilst the other has renewable energy on the top of their shopping list. That’s why we don’t offer one-size-fits-all pricing for commercial connections.

We calculate your tariffs based on your specific annual consumption and your peak demand, not just your postcode. Learn more about business energy contracts.

Micro and small businesses.

We typically define this group as businesses using under 100,000 kWh of electricity per year. If this is you, we offer fixed-rate tariffs for 1, 2, or 3 years. This gives you excellent price certainty, protecting your budget against sudden spikes in the wholesale energy market.

Medium to large enterprises.

For businesses using over 100,000 kWh of electricity or 293,000 kWh of gas, we offer bespoke solutions, either through us (E.ON Next), or E.ON Energy. These often include pass-through tariffs. This means we separate the non-commodity costs, like grid maintenance fees, from your actual energy unit rate. It provides complete transparency on exactly what you’re paying for.

Energy-intensive industries.

If your site requires high-voltage connections, things get a bit more technical. Your dedicated energy specialist will discuss Capacity Charges (kVA) with you. We want to ensure you only pay for the specific bandwidth of energy you actually need to draw from the grid.

The comparison: How E.ON Next matches up.

While finding the cheapest unit rate is often the first priority, the true value of an energy partner goes far beyond that single number.

Unit rates.

  • E.ON Next: We offer volume-based pricing. This means we can often provide better rates for higher consumption.

  • Typical competitor: You might find generic rates based solely on your postcode.

Contract length.

Specialist support.

  • E.ON Next: You get a dedicated Energy Specialist to guide your new connection from start to finish.

  • Typical competitor: You might be stuck in a generic call centre queue for all your inquiries.

Tech integration.

  • E.ON Next: You get access to our E.ON Optimum dashboard for detailed usage tracking.

  • Typical competitor: You receive basic monthly billing with very few helpful data insights.

Market transparency and the deemed rate warning.

Let's be totally honest about industry pitfalls. It is vital to avoid falling onto "Deemed Rates". These are out-of-contract rates that apply if you use energy without a formal agreement. They can be up to 70% more expensive than a negotiated fixed-term contract.

By securing your new connection and your contract at the exact same time with us, you ensure your business launches on a competitive, agreed-upon rate from the very first minute.

Legal and regulatory considerations.

We do things by the book so you don’t have to worry.

  • Compliance acts: All business meters we install are approved types, strictly governed by the Gas Act 1986 and the Electricity Act 1989.

  • MID approval: Your new meters meet all Measuring Instruments Regulations. This ensures your billing accuracy is legally certified.

  • Ofgem accountability: We follow Ofgem guidelines closely. If an eligible business requests a smart meter, suppliers must offer an appointment within six weeks, or risk paying automatic compensation under guaranteed standards.

Technical jargon buster: The new energy dictionary.

The energy industry loves an acronym. Let's translate the noise into plain English.

  • MHHS: Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement. The industry move to recording energy usage every 30 minutes for fairer, more accurate grid management and billing.

  • kVA (Agreed Supply Capacity): The maximum amount of electricity your site is permitted to draw from the grid at any one time. Setting this accurately is vital to avoid paying unnecessary network charges.

  • DNO vs. Supplier: Your DNO builds the road. Your supplier, E.ON Next, provides the car (your meter) and the fuel (your energy).
