CID-14563 Blog Guide buying installing HeatPump

It’s easier than you think to switch to cheaper heating.1

If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to low-carbon heating, you aren’t alone. More people across the UK are looking to ditch gas boilers for cleaner, more efficient alternatives. We know that in the past, the process felt complicated, which is why we have made the process smoother.

From the moment you decide to buy a heat pump online to the day you feel that first cosy warmth, we handle the hard work so you don’t have to.

Think of this as your air source heat pump installation guide, taking you from a quick quote to a fully installed system in five clear steps.

1. Get a heat pump quote in seconds.

Forget calling around for estimates or waiting weeks for a callback. The first step is all about convenience and transparency. You can get a quote for air source heat pump installation in less than 90 seconds.

We just need a few details about your home to provide suggestions just for you. Whether you live in a detached house or a semi-detached property, our smart tools calculate exactly what you need. This includes the heat pump kit itself, any necessary upgrades to your air source heat pump hot water cylinder, and all installation costs.

No hidden costs.

The price you see is the price you pay. The figure on the screen covers everything required for a custom installation:

  • Radiator upgrades and sizing.

  • Pipework alterations.

  • Essential electrical works.

  • Full project management and home survey including bespoke system design.

  • Application costs and paperwork for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant.

2. Choose your heat pump, tariff and installation date.

Once you have your quote, it is time to tailor the package to your needs. We only work with trusted air source heat pump manufacturers to ensure reliability and efficiency.

Compare your consumption.

At this stage, we provide a forecasted energy consumption comparison. You can see exactly how the selected heat pump compares to your existing heating system, giving you a clear picture of potential energy usage before you commit.

You can view the full breakdown of the quote, check efficiency ratings and read detailed descriptions of every component included as part of the quote.

Tariff recommendation.

We don’t just sell you a new heating system. We recommend a dedicated heat pump energy tariff designed specifically for your new tech. Each of our home solutions has a dedicated tariff designed to ensure you make the most of your technology and maximise savings.

  • Time of use savings: You can view a costing breakdown to see how the unit rates compare. Our tariffs often provide cheaper energy during certain periods of the day. This is perfect for running a heat pump efficiently.

  • Simple switching: Switching is simple and can be done in a few clicks whilst you are purchasing your heat pump.

  • Your choice: Prefer not to switch? No problem. You can purchase a heat pump and keep your existing tariff. If you want to switch later, just check out our tariffs

Booking your installation date.

You can select your preferred installation date right there at the checkout. You might notice that we can't install it the next day and there is usually a gap of a few weeks between booking and installation.

There is a good reason for this. Before we can start work, we need to complete your home survey and design work, submit applications to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for your electricity supply and get your BUS grant application approved.

We cannot start until these are fully completed and signed off, but don’t worry as we handle all of this project planning for you.

Flexible payment options.

Once everything is selected, you head to checkout. You can choose to pay upfront or discuss financing options to spread the cost (subject to status). Once your order is complete, we review the information you’ve supplied and get in touch to discuss the next steps.

3. Heat pump survey.

You might be wondering about the technical side of things, like installing a heat pump in an existing home or whether your current radiators are up to the task. This is where our heat pump specialists come in.

Often overlooked, the heat pump survey is one of the most important steps. It ensures your home is going to be the perfect temperature once the system is installed.

During this visit, we will:

  • Assess heat loss: We calculate the overall property’s heat loss to ensure the system is efficient. Unlike a boiler, a heat pump cannot simply be swapped directly. It must be designed to be as efficient as possible.

  • Check radiators: We check if we need to look at sizing radiators for heat pump efficiency. Ensuring individual rooms have sufficiently sized radiators ensures you stay comfortable without using more energy than you need to. Should some radiators need replacing, this is included in the cost.

  • Site equipment: We discuss where the equipment, such as the heat pump, cylinder and thermostat, will be situated.

  • Review electricals: We assess your electrical supply to ensure it can support the new load and plan for any upgrades if required.

Our team will then go away with all these calculations to produce a comprehensive installation plan. This means there are no surprises or unexpected changes on installation day. We may need to tweak our designs based on the survey to ensure everything works correctly, but this rarely causes delays.

4. Heat pump installation.

Once the design is approved and everything is prepared, it is time for your air source heat pump to be installed.

Depending on the complexity of the installation, the size of the property and the number of upgrades required, this typically takes up to 5 days. This timeframe includes:

  • Removal of your old heating system.

  • Installation of any new radiators or pipework.

  • A system flush to remove any debris or contaminants.

  • Installation of the new air source heat pump and hot water cylinder.

  • All commissioning and testing to ensure the system is running perfectly before we hand it over.

Handover and education.

As part of the handover process, we run through the key equipment locations and functions. We’ll show you how to operate the heat pump controls to make the most of the system and discuss any pre-set timings or functions we’ve set up.

If you have any other existing green-home technologies such as solar panels and/or battery storage systems, we’ll explain how the heat pump can integrate and work with them to maximise your self-consumption.

After the installation, we share the commissioning paperwork, warranty information and any approvals obtained as part of the process.

5. Aftercare and support.

We believe that great service doesn't end when the installers drive away. We offer a heat pump warranty and support package that gives you total peace of mind.

Should you need us once your system is installed, whether it is a question on usability or an issue with the system, we’re here to help.

Workmanship warranty (2-years): If your equipment is still within the 2-year workmanship warranty period, we can arrange for one of our engineers to resolve any installation-related issues. This includes work we have carried out and is not limited to the heat pump itself.

Product warranty: If you are outside the workmanship warranty but within the product warranty period and have a fault, we can raise this directly with the manufacturer on your behalf for them to investigate.

We want you to feel confident in your heating for years to come. That means providing clear aftercare and ensuring you always have a point of contact should you need support.

1  Potential annual savings are based on the installing of a standard air source heat pump in an average sized three-bedroom detached home. Savings are dependent on your property size, your household electricity usage, the current of any existing electric storage heater used and its age. Savings are dependent on the current oil/LPG system used, and their age. Figures are sourced from the Energy Saving Trust.
