Saving energy pays.

Saving energy pays.

We’re all rethinking our energy usage right now, but did you know the difference a few simple changes can make to your energy bill? In this blog you’ll find information about what makes up an average household’s energy consumption and tips for savings. These are example figures only. And remember that for increased budgeting accuracy and control over your energy saving, eligible households can also install a smart meter free of charge. Heating and hot water accounts for over 50% of your energy bill.

  • If you only have a single room thermostat for the whole house, for every degree you increase the temperature, it will increase the heating bill by about 10%.

  • Taking a four minute shower could save £95

  • Draught-proofing windows and doors could save £125

Cold appliances such as freezers account for 13% of your bill. Freezers are on 24 hours a day so there’s a benefit to investing in energy efficient appliances if you’re thinking of replacing yours. For instance, choosing a A-rated fridge freezer over an F-rated unit can save you about £800 over its usual 17-year lifetime. Appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers account for 14% of your bill.

  • Avoid using the tumble dryer, this could save you £70

  • Reducing your washing machine use by one run per week for a year and selecting a 30 degree cycle could save you £34

  • Reducing your dishwasher use by one run per week for a year could save you £17

Kitchen appliances make up about 4% of your bill.

  • Not overfilling the kettle could save you £13

Lighting makes up about 5% of your bill.

  • Swapping for LED light bulbs could save you £55

  • Switching off lights in unused rooms could save you £25

Electronics make up about 6% of your bill.

  • Switching off devices on standby could save you £65
